Over the past 25 years, China’s land fiscal policies, have spurred rapid economic growth and urbanization. Large-scale residential construction has alleviated housing shortages and improved living standards. However, under financial leverage, residential planning has predominantly featured gated communities with standardized designs, tailored to fast-paced real estate cycles. This approach has reshaped the built environments and transformed living traditions in China. Amid China’s economic transition, residential development is now shifting toward urban renewal. Professor Wu Gang and WSP Architects have been deeply engaged in this evolution over the past three decades. Departing from standardized mass production, WSP Architects adopt a reflective approach to urban challenges in China. Their housing practices seek to reconcile tensions between urban space, housing regulations, and commercial development models, striving to rebuild the fabric of everyday life within residential spaces.
